Chapter Twenty

Dominique

Pizza soiree in the hotel commons area at 7:30

“Why are we doing this again?” Molly asks for what feels like the seventh time since we’ve been down here.

The girls were reluctant to come as well, but I explained that events like this aren’t only for the subpar pizza that makes you bloated after one bite. It’s for motivation. For intel. For a little friendly competition.

It allows them to try and read the girls we’re up against, see if they have any easy-to-determine weaknesses. And as much as they don’t want to admit it, they're curious about the other teams.

The event is outdoors—the only space big enough for the almost two hundred people here—but the air is much cooler than Georgia and is bearable.

Booths sit in a circle around iron tables that all wrap around a quaint water fountain. Fairy lights stream from one side of the patio to the other, while the surround speakers play the latest hits from Spotify.

It’s a nice little setup, and everyone except the adults seem to be enjoying themselves.

“Is this not the perfect Friday night?” I ask sarcastically, taking another bite from the pizza I’ll definitely regret later.

She chuckles dryly and brushes her ponytail off her shoulder. “Of course. It would be even better if we could drink.”

“This is true,” Nikolai tips his Coke toward Molly. “But I heard there’s an ice cream bar.”

“Technically, you can have a drink if you were in the room alone.” With the number of parent chaperones, we lucked out and don’t have to share a room with any of the girls. “Just make sure you don’t get hammered and end up a mess tomorrow.”

Shifting to Niko, I lift a brow. “And you don’t even like ice cream, so how is that any consolation to you?”

I’m still incredibly surprised at how attentive he’s been since we got off the bus. He’s only checked his phone maybe twice, and one of those was to tell me about the weather radar because I told him if I looked, it’d be bad luck. Other than that, he’s been helping unload bags, handing key cards to parents, ensuring everyone had their jerseys, and even handed out the hotel pamphlets the concierge gave us.

And while all the moms are eating out the palm of his hand, I’m… suspicious.

Okay, maybe that’s not the right word, but I’m definitely feeling some type of way. Like, his help is a huge fucking turn-on, but I’m also nervous about his intentions. But if he is, is that really such a bad thing?

“Who says they don’t have sherbert?”

I nearly bark my responding laughter at him. “Who the hell has sherbet at an ice cream stand?”

“Why are you so against sherbert? Do you have some sort of bad connotation with it?”

Molly giggles behind her napkin.

“No, but it’s such a weird choice. Like people who drink their coffee plain.”

Niko smirks. “You equate my preference of sherbert to murderers.”

I nod. “Yes.”

“Alright, well, I guess we shall see.” He scoots out of the booth and holds his hand out for the few empty paper plates and napkins.
